Geography

Hunterdon County is 437.44 square miles and consists of 26 municipalities

Person of Interest - Colonel John Reading

Col. John Reading is considered the first settlers of Hunterdon County.

Person of Interest - Robert Hunter

Hunterdon County was named for Robert Hunter, a variation of Hunterston, his former home in England. A Scot, he became a British military officer and Colonial Governor of both New York and New Jersey from 1710-1720

History - Early Settlers

Lenape Native Americans inhabited the area.

History - Courthouse and Jail

The First Courthouse and Jail for the County, built about 1720 and rebuilt again in 1828. It is the site of the famous Lindbergh trial where Bruno Hauptmann was tried for the crime of the fatal kidnapping of the son of Colonel Charles Lindbergh. Hauptmann was found guilty and was electrocuted in Trenton. The courthouse still stands today and is in use. (Downtown Flemington)

Geography - Farms

Known for farms, which started as pioneer farms, evolved to family farms where produce and meats were available for sale. Family farms were typically left to the children. (Dvoor Farm, Flemington).

Geography - Sergeantsville

Sergeantsville was once known for its peach orchards.

Architecture - Covered Bridge

The last remaining covered bridge is located in Sergeantsville and Rosemont in Delaware Township.
